Day 2 | In your own space, talk about your fannish origin story.

I'm in my 30s, so of course my fannish origin story starts with Sailor Moon and Pokemon ;D I somehow ended up watching a bunch of Sailor Moon when I was a little kid (like, 4 or 5 years old little), I guess because my mom found it while channel-surfing and figured her small child would like it?

By the time I was given free reign to explore the internet, fandom was already established online and starting to move out of user-groups. I spent hours on Anime Web Turnpike, absolutely enthralled by all the fansites and forums and what have you. I was very lucky to have high speed internet at home starting in the late 90s, and I took full advantage of it XD

I loved everyone's little corners of the internet, seeing what people did differently with their spaces, and I knew that someday, I wanted to be part of it.

Lucky for me, my dad is a computer programmer and engineer, and I grew up surrounded by tech. He was very insistent that I learn how to make websites, because he could tell that the internet was the future...and what better way to practice HTML than with a Sailor Moon fansite? My first websites are long gone, both online and any offline versions, because 10 year olds aren't necessarily known for their dedications to backing up their files.

But I can't talk about my fannish history without bringing up probably my biggest support as a tiny weeb. My cousin, [twitter.com profile] shaenongarrity, was absolutely formative to my love of anime. During her college breaks, she took me to see Miyazaki films in theaters, something practically unheard of in 90s, and it opened my eyes to anime as something beyond the after-school block of programming on Kids' WB. So what if I couldn't really grasp what was going on in Princess Mononoke? It was still the coolest thing I'd ever seen on the big screen.

She also worked for VIZ in the 00s and would send me whole boxes of manga, making me the coolest kid in town~ I had a subscription to Smile magazine thanks to her, which introduced me to Peach Girl, which I absolutely latched onto. I was so inspired; my diary was basically nothing but Peach Girl fanfiction for a couple years there XD I still wasn't publishing any of it, but it's still so important to me, if nothing else.

And sooooooo, all of these various pieces - as well as some others that I'm sure I'm forgetting - led to me finally publishing my first fanfic. I'd lurked for years, but wanting to post my own fic got me out of my shell, so to speak, and I've been a part of fandom spaces ever since :D

Day 1 | Update your fandom information.

I made a new layout for my journal, which includes an updated blurb about myself in the sidebar! I'm very pleased with all the matching assets I made, too. I'm also excited that I've been active enough on DW that I've made two layouts for the same fandom :D

Also, I've been pretty active on the Ensemble Stars Wiki, so I updated my profile there with the projects I'm currently working on.

Overall, I'm pretty deep in Ensemble Stars! hell, I post fanfics on my AO3, and I make graphics at [community profile] killiansicons ♥ Basically all of my social medias are linked in my pinned post, but I'm most active on bluesky and DW.

Day 1 | Update your fandom information.

I finally made a matching default icon for the layout I finished over the summer + did a complete overhaul of my profile!!! I've been basically copy/pasting the same one since uhhhhh probs 2007 or earlier?? With minor updates/modifications over the years + different graphics to match journal layouts (tho the last one has been the same since like, late 2018? early 2019? I never made it match any layouts since then, oops!).

SO!!!!! That's good!!!!!!! I also rearranged/updated some links on my pinned post to include my bluesky, since it's basically replaced twitter for me. It's slower paced and more chill, probs because less people are there, but I really like its vibes. I needed something less intense ><

But to sum up most of this, I'm currently most active in Trigun, posting my fanfics on AO3, and chatting with people on bluesky and discord~

Day 14 | In your own space, talk about what you think the future holds for fandom.

I like to think of myself as an optimistic person, but also a realistic one. I've been on the internet long enough that Anime Web Turnpike was where I found all the hot new websites for my favorite fandoms. So I've seen a lot of ups and downs, migrations, etc.

I worry that with the great Tumblr mess that is going on presently, fandom is becoming disjointed and spread thin. I worry that spaces are becoming less accessible and more restrictive, and that there's no good place for anyone to settle right now. I'm loving Dreamwidth, but I know that it's a hard sell to most people who are used to the simple, fast-paced feeds of tumblr and twitter. I think that pillowfort could be a good alternative, but it's still far too much in beta.

After tumblr banned adult content, I made the decision to quit entirely, keeping my blog up but only using it to occasionally reblog a post with all my contact info on other sites. But now that I'm helping run a big bang, it would be stupid to ignore the huge amount of people who use tumblr as their primary fandom website. So I've resigned myself to going back there at least for that. I hate it, because I hate the policies they have enacted.

But I do have hope that someday fandom has a place online that most everyone can agree on, with policies that don't stifle and lock people out. For me right now, it's Dreamwidth, and I'd love for it to be for awhile. All I know is that I'm willing to try out new places as they show up, with a hope for a brighter fandom future :D

Day 6 | In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts.

I actually struggled with this one a bit, so I'll admit that I poked around a few people's wish lists for examples. I always feel greedy asking for things - and I'm lucky enough to have some very good fandom friends - but here we go :D

1) Comments on my fics or just...any sorts of interactions with my writing. I'd love more people to talk fic ideas with, as well as questions about my writing process/planning/backstory behind decisions in fics.

2) Related, but I'd love fanart/remixes/re-imaginings/fanmixes of fics I've written. I'm always up for transformative works (and I recently rediscovered something that someone wrote inspired by one of mine back in 2007, and it brought such a smile to my face!!!).

3) More friends here on Dreamwidth!! I'm about to be a mess about Kingdom Hearts 3 dropping at the end of the month, and I'd love to have people to talk to about that. Also, friends who just write in general! My other fandom interests include Magi, YuGiOh, and Homestuck but I just like to talk to people in general :D

4) Writing prompts. I used to take requests on tumblr, but now that I've quit using mine, I'm at a loss. I love writing requests but I don't really know where to get started here.

5) Recommendations for fanmixes that aren't hosted on spotify OR include a track listing outside of spotify so I can track them down. My computer doesn't like to play nice with spotify, so I end up missing out on fannish playlists these days ;w;

5th-Jan-2019 10:12 am - Fandom Snowflake Challenge | Day 5
setsuntamew: (Kichi → b&w sketch)
Day 5 | In your own space, promote three communities, challenges, blogs, pages, Twitters, Tumblrs or platforms and explain why you love them.

1) [tumblr.com profile] dailyjuhaku: Even though I don't really use tumblr anymore, I still appreciate the juhaku community is still going strong!! I think it's very wholesome, especially since Magi isn't very big now that the manga has ended.

2) [community profile] getyourwordsout: It's only my first year participating, but I'm finding that the community is incredibly inspiring and resourceful already :D There are a lot of great people running it and participating in it, and I'm really hopeful that it'll help me be a more consistent writer (rather than just a few bursts during the year and FRANTICALLY SCRAMBLING DURING NANOWRIMO).

3) unNocturnal: One of my favorite artists to commission, I love how dreamy their sketches and line work always look *w* Their patreon has some very reasonable offerings, especially for their skill level. I'm also currently using art of theirs as my phone lock screen, and it always brings me a smile :D

setsuntamew: (Axel & Roxas → we'll go together)
Day 1 | In your own space, talk about your Happy Place—the things that give you joy, calms you or keeps you sane.

My Happy Place is my home: a two bedroom apartment in the suburbs of a city that isn't my hometown - but is still one that I've grown to love - with an amazing partner and two cats. I never felt like I had my own place growing up, so having a home that I've built with my wife, decorated with all the fandom prints and figures and etc that I've always loved brings me joy and sanity. It's exactly the kind of place I dreamed of having when I was a teenager, and it's comforting to know that things really did get better for me :D

Something I've been meaning to do for awhile: type up a list of all the pairings I support/read in various fandoms. Yeah yeah, I'm such a nerd. And let me tell you, I have been in a lot of fandoms OVER THE YEARS so this is going to be interesting, to say the least.

Fandoms are in alphabetical order. Pairings are in whatever order I think of them in. Some all are explained just because lolz, I do these things. I underlined those that I read/write a lot.

this is the epitome of my love of fandom :D )

I THINK THAT THIS TOOK OVER AN HOUR. WHAT THE HELL. I OBVIOUSLY HAVE NO LIFE. I encourage all of you to do the same; it's fun!!!

Also I obviously have too many fandoms. TOOOOO MANYYYY. I'm pretty sure I forgot some that I've been in, too...I've had to go back a couple times to add more...
2nd-Feb-2010 08:56 pm - cat issues
setsuntamew: art of Kohaku from [Innocent STORM], smiling happily, with light textures and illegible tiny text to the left of his face (Yami Malik → licking rod)
I went to bed at five and woke up at eight. And yes, I'm still full of energy. THREE HOURS OF SLEEP FTW. I handle this surprisingly well. Basically it's like my entire high school experience all over again XD

Today was my ancient history test, which went surprisingly well! YAY! And then instead of risking CCAC's food, I got cheetos for a snack. Yeah...I hadn't had a chance to eat before school due to studying, so I was like fuck it, I don't care. Then sociology was really easy...it was a lot of research methods stuff that I'd already taken with psychology. I wrote fanfiction instead!

Then I did the daily rush home, eat lunch, then pick up Carson from school all within like...an hour. It's cool though, I do enjoy being in the car & driving. And it keeps me busy! :D Today I ended up getting to Carson's school early, so I got some fanfic writing done. I'm really trying to write and finish a chaptered fic, since I've never accomplished that before.

We didn't end up getting the cat from Animal Friends. We went back out this evening and apparently they hadn't told us about the majority of his health problems. He requires daily medicine & has a chronic vomiting problem, on top of having to have special food. And we didn't find this out until after they had made us sit around for a good hour and a half. So we're going to try the humane society and Animal Rescue League instead.

It's a mess >_>

But anyway. I'm off to fanfic world again!!! Yami Malik is a cat. For serious. It's going to be awesome XD
