| friend read through Riddle of Steel, which is mostly famous for its detailed combat system, and I'm struck by how much of a historical anomaly it is
Author commentary describes it as responding to "dnd is too gamey and easy these days (00s)" which i mostly associate with OSR takes, but, Riddle of Steel is tackling that by trying for more and more detailed and realistic rules, rather than the retrocloning or simplification that OSR takes would try; and the authors and games that tended to reference it were Forge narrativists, who were neither doing Low Fantasy nor trying for HEMA realism.
I'm reminded of Shadow of the Demon Lord doing Grime Murder Hours Fantasy at a time when that was a popular OSR aesthetic, but in a grid combat way, inspired by D&D 4e. This is a departure from both the OSR stereotype and the Riddle of Steel method, but still appealing to a desire for brutal combat and dark fantasy that all three tried to claim.
moral of the story: aesthetic will betray you, you gotta talk about rules

| Today we currently have 16 inches of snow and are expecting the snow to keep going until midnight (It's after 7pm here). Hooo, it's so pretty but sooo cold. We walked over to help my parents and shoveled out their driveway twice. My body feels so broken hhh, my rosacea is also really angry. Currently on the floor to rest my back after drinking plenty of water.
Work has kept me busy and the wind chill has been a lot, so I've gotten behind on Snowflake but have enjoyed reading the entries as they come up on my reading list. I'll catch up with some entries soon.
Lately I have been digging through the treasure troves of fanfic for Jack/Will from Pirates of the Caribbean after rewatching the original trilogy with my wife. Really loving it, already have my own canon au/canon divergence fic in the works.
We'll see if that or my Nem/Mel fic gets finished first.
Otherwise looking forward to this Saturday - our annual trip to H-Mart with our friend c:

| You have likely heard of the recent Heated Rivalry craze-- a Canadian live-action 6-episode adaptation of the Game Changers gay hockey romance series. As longtime fujos, me and ebaths decided to finally watch it for ourselves, and I'm sure fujo friends are dying for my report, so here it is...
The TLDR is I basically didn't like it / I thought it was bad. SORRY!!! My lengthy review is under a cut so fans of the show can avoid taking psychic damage from all my criticism. HOWEVER, I still think it's great that the exists. Demonstrating an eager audience for gay media is by itself awesome, and hopefully will inspire future investors and creators to help produce more (and better) stuff in the future. And as always, people have different taste, and I'm glad people (especially gay people and fujos) are out there enjoying themselves.
I also want to say that I saw a lot of talk about how much the adaptation improved upon the source material. I have only read a few sections of the books so I can't confirm this, but honestly I feel like I'd have a higher opinion of the books than the show. The kind of entertainment you expect from what was literally originally published as AO3 fanfiction is clearly different from what you expect from six hour-long episodes of TV on HBO Max. Plus, something like cringe dialogue has less impact in a format where you're expected to essentially skim ahead to the smut, versus when it's spoken aloud and acted in real time. Just to give my angle here as I will continuously default to blaming the TV show creators for something that I'm aware was also in the book.
( onto the criticism... oh also there's going to be spoilers )

| So I've caught up with Runaway to the Stars, and while I have a lot of emotions about it, few of them are able to be worded in a way that makes sense. But yeah one thing I can say about the webcomic is that it's very human? Not applicable since a lot of characters are very much alien... Sophont? Sophont. About the ways they think & feel about their situations. Also the situations the characters have been in? Very plausible. It helps the comic stay slice-of-life even when it's currently about getting an illegal ship back in orbit. Also read this post by ysabetwordsmith which was about how agriculture tends to get misunderstood why white people in specific (in the sense of "monocropping isn't the only thing that count"). Which makes me happy that Jay has clearly put in a lot of thought in the diets of the non-human characters, even if Talita gets the short end of the stick :( Also made me think again about sci-fi worldbuilding... that + my au Marstuck, which is spiritually inspired by the RttS comic. Specifically with me getting a bit into making trolls more plausible + figuering out how they'd be as 2 seperate cultures prior to the Mars rebellion. With specifically Alternia having been a colony of Beforus before it's countercultural revolution which- it was countering the culture of Beforus! Just, also dystopic. | |

| The snow storm that's hitting basically all of the US except the west coast has given me a great excuse to call out of work today. I've been either working or too tired to really be on here for like a week. Kinda also fell off of Snowflake since I haven't felt super inspired by any of the other challenges. But, I did make sure to grant some wishes already so I feel less bad about that. Maybe the next one will interest me? Genshin update: I got Ineffa after losing my 50/50 to Tighnari first. She made me almost hit hard pity once she was guaranteed to come home. Of course (screams). Needless to say, I'm now broke and fighting for my life to get primos for my attempt at pulling Illuga. Pulling for 4*s always scares me since you're never guaranteed to get all three of the featured ones. There's also a 5* rerunning soon that I want so... pray for me. Exploring Nod-Krai has been really fun though! I even managed to get caught up with the Archon quests and all I can say about that is... Holy Shit.
In other news, I recently finished revising that old fic I wanted to improve. I might make a post for it after this. I also get a bit of a break from being a person seeing as my first day of classes (tomorrow) was also cancelled due to the storm lol. If anyone else is getting affected by it, I hope you're staying warm, safe, and sane!

| I had assumed that the granola people would turn to gooseberries as a superfood at some point in my lifetime.
But if Home Depot is selling gooseberries, then it's going to happen before the decade is out.
|
| Home Depot has blue banana plants and two varieties of gooseberry.
I'm amazed. | |

| Having slid rapidly from 'enthusing about my new favourite show' to 'outright propaganda', I've written a Goes Wrong Show primer for tv_talk. I thought I'd crosspost it here, in case anyone wants a general overview of my latest obsession, although I suspect my posts over the last month have already conveyed a lot of this! If anyone's in the mood for something silly and fun, I'd like to recommend The Goes Wrong Show, which I discovered recently and absolutely fell in love with. What is The Goes Wrong Show?If you've heard of The Play That Goes Wrong, this comedy series is from the same theatre company, Mischief Theatre. Every thirty-minute episode is a new short play, performed by the determined but deeply unfortunate Cornley Drama Society. Every play goes as wrong as humanly possible. In addition to being very funny, the plays are startlingly impressive technical achievements. These are genuine stage plays being filmed in front of a live audience, and making things 'go wrong' convincingly requires incredible pinpoint timing. So much hard work goes into messing everything up; it must be so much trickier than performing a play that goes right! If you like Taskmaster, you might also enjoy this; they have a similar sense of people desperately struggling on with their mission while everything falls apart around them. ( Character overview below the cut. )Where can I watch The Goes Wrong Show? There's a good chance you'll be able to watch it at no cost! If you're in the UK, it's on BBC iPlayer (or DVD, if you don't have a television licence). If you're outside the UK, I believe The Goes Wrong Show is officially available for free on the Lionsgate YouTube channel. As the videos are blocked for me, it's hard for me to check (let me know if it doesn't seem like the right link!), but I think this YouTube playlist should have all twelve episodes. I've heard from a couple of people based in the US that it's also on Amazon Prime there. If I only ever watch one episode of this show, which would you recommend?I love the whole show, and I think the first-listed episode ('The Spirit of Christmas') is a solid starting point. If you only ever watch one, though, the episode '90 Degrees' is a genuinely insane, extraordinary feat of performance. If you're wondering, they're not using CGI; they actually did that. | |
