| Now recruiting: DW users who would be interested in the possibility of helping us out in one of these legal challenges, now or future!
If you would be open to the idea of potentially filing something with a court talking about the ways that the restrictions that Dreamwidth would have to impose to comply with a specific state's law (commonly, obligations like age verification via document scan or biometric verification, treating users as though they're underage until/unless they age-verify, etc) would have a chilling effect on your online activity and speech, and especially if you're a parent who would also be willing to explain to a court all the ways in which a specific state's law would interfere with or burden your parenting decisions: we're looking to assemble a list of people we can contact in the future if necessary.
If this sounds like you, please leave a comment with what state you currently live in. (Also, commenting is not a commitment, just you saying that you would be okay with us reaching out to you and seeing whether you were available/able to help.) I'm currently most interested in hearing from people from South Carolina, but the ubiquity of these laws being proposed means any state could be the next. All comments are screened so nobody but us can see them.
(Obligatory risk considerations: you would have to file under your wallet/government name, and there's a chance of having to associate your wallet name with your DW username to at least the court and to the state, if not publicly. If this could be a problem for you, don't risk it! But if you're willing and able, us being able to show the court a sworn statement from one of our users about the effects the mandated changes would have on you could be very helpful.)
EDIT: Also I forgot to explicitly specify, this is for US folks! We do not unfortunately have the ability to get involved with anything outside the US.

XANDER: I just want to look respectable in this, considering I'm probably gonna die in it.
CORDELIA: Excuse me?
XANDER: I'm telling you. I woke up the other day with this feeling in my gut. I just know there's no way I'm getting out of this school alive.
CORDELIA: Wow, you've really mastered the power of positive giving-up.
XANDER: I've been lucky too many times. My number's coming up. And I was short! One more rotation and I'm shipping state-side, you know what I mean?
CORDELIA: Seldom if ever.

| Adding "figure out differences between RPG Maker 2000/2003/XP/MV" to my to-do list. And I suppose "actually make something with them" too, that would also be good to do.
it was a really good deal

| Life has been busy orz. I got sick and then I got hit with a migraine. I'm doing better now but it's looking like we're going to get another foot of snow (or more) Sunday into Monday. Godddddddddd, I'm over it. Work has been crazy due to logistical reasons outside our control - the glamour of being a contractor lol. Nice Things: spent Valentine's day driving up to Kam Nam and H Mart in MA, bought a lot of wonderful groceries and ate good food with my wife and our friend (I affectionately refer to us hanging out as our throuple time lol.) I took the time to learn how to navigate the PostCrossing forums and joined some tags and round robins, already mailed some stuff out. Sending and receiving mail has become my happy place as of late c: I have read SO MUCH Heated Rivalry fanfiction. The mistaken identity Jane(+/)Lily fics have been especially delightful <3_<3 Otherwise I finished working on my Stuff I Love: Top Ten Edition Challenge 2. | Week 3 of the Stuff I Love challenge!! 💞
This week's theme is music. I did a similar top 10 music list during the last Snowflake Challenge, so I think this time I should put some sort of restriction... so here we have top 10 covers by Hololive and Holostars members.
For those unfamiliar, Hololive Production is virtual YouTuber (Vtuber) company. Vtubers are basically content creators who use a virtual avatar—typically live 2D or 3D, using face/motion tracking—to present themselves. Hololive Production members (or talents, as they're sometimes called) usually stream video games, make both original and cover music, and sometimes perform as idols, among other activities. They're separated into subgroups, but the main ones are Hololive, which is composed of female talents, and Holostars which houses the male talents.
I don't frequently watch live streams unless it's a concert or karaoke stream—most of the vtuber content I engage with are through clips, but I'm always game for cover songs. A lot of vtubers (especially Japanese ones) actually started out or have some background as an utaite (JP cover artist), which I also loved listening to many years ago. I love them for both their aesthetically pleasing music videos (even if sometimes it's just png recycling lyric videos due to budget constraints) and for whatever spin the cover artists or arrangers can put into the song to make it their own.
CW: Some music videos might trigger those with photosensitivity. Without further ado, here are my 10 picks as well as 4 honorable mentions in no particular order! :"D

| It can be a real challenge to characterise the fictional members of the Cornley Drama Society, given that they spend so much of Goes Wrong canon playing other characters. Therefore, I thought I'd see if I could put together a character profile of Robert Grove. 'Are you going to write characterisation guides for the entire drama society?' No. I'll be honest: I just wanted an excuse to talk at length about Robert Grove, because he's perfect. ( Robert Grove: a character summary. )Robert's best quality as a friend: he will give generously of his time and effort to fix your problem, or at least to fix what he has decided is your problem. This... may not actually be helpful, but it will at least be well-intentioned. Robert's worst quality as a friend: he will sleep with your mother, insult your acting and throw you under the bus to play the Dane, and he won't even understand why you're annoyed with him afterwards. In short, Robert is an egotistic and outspoken man with a passion for theatre, an intense sincerity, a vast capacity for self-absorption, a need to be important, a desire for company and an absolute lack of self-awareness. He's relentlessly loud and dramatic. He will refuse to apologise if he doesn't think he's in the wrong, and he will never think he's in the wrong. He's a nightmare. I love him. | |

| I didn't watch Dunc and Egg but Cam did, and he found himself thinking about how fun it could be to have a story where a somewhat loner knight (disgraced/unproven/just antisocial, whatever) takes on a determined and surprisingly knowledgable page, who he eventually realises is a girl in disguise, and they have Adventures (but no romance, preferably)
He asked if I knew of any stories like that, since it feels like a really obvious premise, and I felt like I must have seen something along those lines by Tamora Pierce/ Mercedes Lackey etc but nothing came to mind. eg the Alanna series has the crossdressing page part but not the loner knight, Kel doesn't have the cross-dressing, etc.
So I come to you! At this point we're mostly just curious if it exists at all, but actual recs are definitely not unwelcome. Books/tv/movies, whatever.

| ough my spoons ... basically null ... so annoying when minor things add up to somehow sap you of strength ... like wym trying to figure out how to set up the new TV in my parents room made my brain feel like it got turned into literal pudding?? all i did was that, make fish for dinner, hunt QR codes, and make fish for dinner. wait i already wrote that lmfao im not fixing that. that and hollow knight for 2 hours kinda scrambled my brain

| Hi, and welcome to the eleventh round of Be The First! This is a low-pressure challenge to write a fic, of any length, for a fandom that previously had none. That's it! If you want to take part, just reply to this post :) Quick rundown: You have two months to write. The deadline is at 23:59 GMT on the 20th of April, and the archive will go live at 00:01 GMT on the 22nd of April. You can submit up to four stories, as long as they are for different canons. If you'd like more information beyond those basic points, then you can find the FAQ right here. The AO3 collection for this year is here, and I'll be putting up a fandom promo post in roughly a week. A big thank you to everyone who is reading this, whether you're a returning participant or someone checking out the challenge for the first time. As always, I'm really looking forward to seeing what you all write this year! ♥ | |

| dang we really are at the 20th of february ... wack. also 10th game log!!! ACNLfinally got QR codes unlocked, so I went hunting for some pathways ... due to the 10 slot limitation (and me not wanting to make more characters to get around that lmao), i decided on using this path, and leaving one slot open for clothing swaps, another for the flag, and the rest for the pathway + one two-slot blanket i thought was pretty cute and i could put in 1-3 places sahara visited today and gave me the meadow floor i desperately wished i could get!!!!! all for sylvie's greenhouse room!!!!! and the starry sky background would be really nice in the study room ( images, they're just big )aside from that, paid loan off, bought a door so i can't upgrade immediately and ... yeah, mostly busy with QR coding right now Hollow Knightso many new area unlocks ... deepnest has been unlocked and thats a HUGE area from what I can see, but my brain is definitely mush after 2 hours of playing almost LMAO | |

| Procrastinating on my Tit4Tat assignment and listening to today's new release, Dreamerie by FlowerLeaf. (Kimara, I think you might enjoy The Wake!) But! I have also been reading! ...Dante Alighieri. This is the 700th anniversary edition, translated by J.G. Nichols. It's ... surprisingly hand-hold-y. Like, each canto is prefaced with a prose explanation of what happens in the canto (spoilers!!!!), and adds footnotes in support of readers who can't count (e.g. "So in the smallest circle, at the centre" is footnoted as "The ninth and last"; Inferno XI) and who can't keep track of pronouns (sooo many occurrences of "Named Person, did this and that, and lo, a slightly long description! Is he¹ still alive?" with a footnote on "'He' refers to Named Person"). Judas Iscariot is given an explanatory footnote. ("Who betrayed Christ") One would think that anyone operating on even a pop culture osmosis level of Christianity would realize that the Judas dude being specially punished in the hell for betrayers is probably the one who betrayed Jesus. Anyway! I have read Inferno, and just started Purgatorio. The translation is eminently readable, with transparent verse. (I guess I'd hoped for a slightly more showy take to mine for fic titles, but I'm not complaining.) Also Dante and Virgil's relationship, though probably considered normal enough by the standards of the period, comes across as very homo by present ones: Dante is incredibly appreciative of Virgil guiding him through the way, gets carried around by him, and kisses his cheeks with gratefulness on multiple occasions. Not really that many thoughts, but. Reading. Classics. I fully expect to go WTF at Purgatorio and especially Paradisio, because uhhh not a Christian at all lol, but hey, at least I can say I read them. - Music:FlowerLeaf - Silksong

| Opening in the days of the Harlem Renaissance, the first page of this novel states the culmination of its story: A door-to-door cosmetics salesman shot his eighteen-year-old mistress, and then the salesman's wife crashed the funeral to try to stab the girl's corpse. Why? The reader wants to know, and so do many of the characters. The book offers answers only indirectly, taking a sprawling path into the characters' pasts, where their families came from, and the intergenerational trauma of the slavery era that's still in living memory at this time. The prose style of this book really worked for me and did a lot of the heavy lifting of drawing me into the story. It's lyrical and artistic without ever sacrificing readability. If there's a bit you don't understand, you will understand it in time, but first we have to go back to the beginning of another character's story and circle back around to connect to the main plot—and it does always connect. I think this is the meaning of the title; the book is not about jazz music, but it has the shape of jazz in the way it can state a melody, wander off and explore for a while until you've almost forgotten what song it is, and then return very satisfyingly before passing it off to another player in the ensemble. I found this book in a free box and then it sat on my shelf for years (shout-out to lebateleur, my read-books-we-already-own accountability buddy!). It has a lot of underlining, highlighting, and marginal notes from whoever had it before, pointing out themes of dehumanization, rehumanization, and the necessity of deep context for understanding. They underlined "Something else you have to figure in before you figure it out" and also wrote it in pen on the title page. On multiple pages they wrote "Jazzonia" in the margin, by which I assume they meant the Langston Hughes poem. Jazzonia (1926)
Oh, silver tree! Oh, shining rivers of the soul!
In a Harlem cabaret Six long-headed jazzers play. A dancing girl whose eyes are bold Lifts high a dress of silken gold.
Oh, singing tree! Oh, shining rivers of the soul!
Were Eve’s eyes In the first garden Just a bit too bold? Was Cleopatra gorgeous In a gown of gold?
Oh, shining tree! Oh, silver rivers of the soul!
In a whirling cabaret Six long-headed jazzers play.

| As someone adjacent to IndieWeb and FOSS circles, I see discussions of tech adoption in my feeds often.
There are two arguments (or categories of argument) I’ve started collecting notes on because of how often I notice them. This is my attempt to process those notes. I’m curious to know what thoughts other people have on these ideas.
The first argument says that people naturally want to personalize tools that are part of their daily lives, and thus “healthy” personal computer usage includes using software and services that enable choice. The other argument says that people only use computers because they have to, so the tool’s effect on their lives should be minimized and thus streamlined as much as possible. That means avoiding customization and setting clear expectations for how software should be used.
The question this raises for me is: What does it mean for a computer to be personal right now? That is, what does a computer look like when it’s fit for the purpose of belonging to someone?
