I wonder...
I know I've been on such a nostalgia kick this spring and I don't 100% know why but here I am!!! I think it's partially because of getting into a bunch of stuff I used to do or things that are somewhat older (ie, Trigun being popular when I was in middle/high school)- or at least that's the best guess I've got.
But since I've been big on graphics again (especially icon making) I've been thinking about it a lot, too. I've been making icons since early 2004 - when I joined LJ & GJ - and it was such a different scene then. I know that journaling sites like this have fallen by the wayside but it's so fucking wild getting into a new fandom here on DW. There are way less people here and so there are less making icons, so I've had to rely almost entirely on making my own.
And that's not bad; I love making icons!! It's just wild as hell that Trigun: Stampede is airing weekly and I see it all over my tumblr and I have to make my own food because????? It's current but journaling and making fandom graphics isn't a thing anymore, not in the same way.
And then that got me thinking about icons I've got that I've been using for awhile. "Awhile" didn't really feel like that long but it sure is something to realize you've been carting around the same KH2 icons since 2006 because you found them on LJ, used them on GJ and then LJ, and now, still have them on DW. There are people actively creating fanworks right now who are younger than these icons!!!!
These icons are older than I was when I started using them!!!!!!!!!!
SCREAMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
But my own existential dread aside- I really do wonder what's become of everyone who was making icons on LJ back in the day. Both sides of the icon making world I inhabited - sparkle graphics and anime bullshit - were so important to me and became part of who I am now, so I think about it sometimes. I think about how many hours and hours and hours people put in and how influential it was to so many people, and I hope they've all gone onto bright futures. I hope they look back on it fondly and even if they don't, even if it was just a thing they did decades ago, even if seems like more than a lifetime has passed since, I hope they know that there's at least one person still using and appreciating a sliver of their art.

Ditto, it was always one of my favorite things, browsing for new icons and using them. And there were so many resources for making your own. I have a folder full of icons (not to mention resources) I've gathered and I look at them fondly. <3

Especially since I really miss that part of internet fandom culture ;w; It was always so fun to get into something new and immediately go hunting for icons to match :D

Edit: I can't believe I didn't see your AkeShu graphic. ♥🌟
