Fandom Snowflake Challenge | Day 7

Day 7 | Stretch yourself a little and try something new. Go play in a new fandom or with a new pairing. Try working in a new medium. Or check out some fanworks that are new to you.

So, this one has been the most difficult for me so far. I have a lot of trouble going out and reading new things (especially in Magi, since I have read literally every fic for my OTP already...) so I decided that I would try a new medium: drawing.

I mean yeah, I've tried drawing some on and off, but I've never really been successful. So I borrowed my wife's iPad and spent a chunk of time playing around in Procreate. I'm not exactly happy of anything I made, but I'm proud of myself for trying!! And maybe someday I'll be at a point where I feel comfortable sharing what I've done.

But for now, I'm gonna keep it in the depths of their iPad XD

I'M PROUD OF YOU FOR STEPPING OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE! I know you have wanted to get better at drawing, so I'm happy you were able to use my iPad to mess around with it some and try out some things. You're the coolest.

ITS SO FUCKING HARD YOU JUST DIE A LOT AND THEN ONE DAY LOOK AT THE STUFF YOU MADE LIKE SIX MONTHS AGO AND GO "HOW WAS I SO GOOD THEN AND I'M A FAILURE NOOOOW" even though when you were making it 6 months ago you felt the same way. It's a constant growth process, BUT I BELIEVE IN YOUUUU

One of the things I've found most inspiring is to look at before and after pictures of artists who have made a habit of sketching regularly. I saw a YouTube video a few years back (I don't remember the artist or I would recommend it) where someone was flipping through an old sketchbook and showing what they drew just a few years before and then showing what they draw now and it was mind-blowing. They went from kinda-not-that-great to wow-that-almost-looks-like-a-photograph in just a few years and it was all from just a lot of practice. (I swore then that I'd start drawing every day and the only time I hit that goal was for one month for Inktober, but even with my half-hearted efforts, I've finally started to see improvement.)

And it's not always just chronological progression. I still have bad days where nothing is turning out right. Part of my improvement is just learning to not give up so quickly. Sometimes a drawing just needs a little more tweaking instead of giving up and throwing it away.

I think my Hulk drawing is one of the best things I've ever done and yet this was the first attempt at it. In the past I would have just said "Argh, that sucks" and given up. Instead, a lot of erasing and re-drawing later and I had one of my favorite pieces. Sometimes we just quit too soon.
